Here’s a short list of standard minimal credit and income requirements to keep in mind when applying for an apartment in Chicago:

  1. Credit Score:

    • Minimum 600–650 (some landlords may accept lower scores with additional conditions like a co-signer or higher security deposit).

  2. Income:

    • Monthly gross income of at least 3x the rent

  3. Employment Verification:

    • Proof of stable employment (e.g., pay stubs, offer letter, or tax returns for self-employed applicants).

  4. Rental History:

    • No recent evictions and positive references from previous landlords.

  5. Security Deposit:

    • Typically 1–1.5x the monthly rent (1,200–1,200–1,800), depending on creditworthiness.

  6. Debt-to-Income Ratio:

    • Ideally below 30–40% of monthly income going toward rent and other debts.

  7. Co-Signer Option:

    • Available for applicants who don’t meet credit or income requirements (co-signer must meet the criteria).
